From lakeside concerts to film festivals, Lake Maggiore comes alive with events in the warmer months.
Cannero Riviera Citrus Festival (March):
For a few days, the village’s private citrus gardens open to visitors, and the square just outside the hotel fills with market stalls, tastings and citrus-themed displays.
Camellia Exhibition (March):
Held in the same weeks as the Citrus Festival, this flower show brings dozens of camellia varieties on display around the village.
Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (July):
Celebrated on the second Sunday of July, this traditional patronal festival is one of Cannero Riviera’s most evocative events.
In the evening, a solemn procession dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel sets out from the main church of San Giorgio Martire and winds through the streets of the village to the lakeside promenade before returning to the church of San Giorgio Martire along a circular route. Carried by devoted volunteers, the statue of the Madonna stops at significant points along the way while prayers are read in different languages, asking for protection for all those who live around the lake and those who visit it. In particular, the procession and the statue stop in front of Hotel Cannero for the blessing of the lake and prayers of thanksgiving recited in several languages. During the procession, hundreds of small lit candles are placed on the water, creating a moving and unforgettable atmosphere as their light is reflected across the lake at night.
On the following Monday, a procession of boats decorated with flowers accompanies the parish priest towards the Castles of Cannero and the lake’s smallest island, where a statue of the Madonna stands. There, a commemorative ceremony pays tribute to those who have passed away, remembered on the peaceful waters of Lake Maggiore.
Mid-August Cannerese (August):
Live music and open-air entertainment fill the lakefront for Ferragosto, all within easy walking distance of the hotel.
Il Maggiore Theatre in Verbania:
A year-round programme of concerts and shows (mostly in Italian), a short drive from Cannero Riviera.
Stresa Festival (July–September):
One of Lake Maggiore’s major live-music festivals, staged across Stresa for most of the summer.
JazzAscona (June):
New Orleans-style jazz takes over Ascona’s lakeside promenade.
Moon&Stars, Locarno (July):
International artists perform open-air in Piazza Grande.
Locarno Film Festival (August):
Open-air screenings draw filmmakers and cinema-goers from around the world.
